HEADLINE: REMARKS BY REPRESENTATIVE CORRINE BROWN (D-FL) AT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

BODY:

(Applause.)

REP. BROWN: God is good! (Cheers.) All the time, God is good.

Greetings to my fellow Democrats and the wonderful people of the 3rd Congressional District of Florida. I am Corrine Brown -- (cheers, applause) -- the same Corrine Brown that spoke out on the House of Representatives about the travesty of the election of 2000 -- (cheers, applause) -- and whose words of protest was stricken from the Congressional Record. (Booing.)

Understand me. In November of 2000, in my district alone, 27,000 votes was kicked out by faulty machines. (Booing.) Those votes went uncounted -- 27,000 votes, in a area I represent, that votes 98 percent Democratic. What's more, many voters was wrongly purged from registration lists, for a variety of unacceptable reasons.

I want to preserve for all people the right to vote and the right to have their votes counted. (Cheers, applause.)

America, we have a lot of work to do. Much is at stake. We need leadership to help us educate our kids, uplift the middle class and create jobs, support our veterans, provide affordable health care for families and seniors.

I believe all Americans can count on John Kerry and John Edwards to do just that. (Applause.)

A good reminder that the job lies ahead of us is to change the direction this country is going in is the dashboards on your car. "R" is for "reverse" and "D" is for "drive." America, we must reverse and move into drive. The leadership team of John Kerry and John Edwards is the perfect vehicle to move us forward. What we do in the next 95 days will determine whether we go forward with John Kerry or stay in reverse. If we move forward, we need to shift into drive with two new drivers, John Kerry and John Edwards. (Cheers, applause.)

This November, give this administration what millions of Americans have gotten for the last three and a half year: a pink slip. (Displays pink piece of paper.)

(Cheers, applause.)

Wake up, America, so that what happened in 2000 does not happen again in 2004.

As I take my seat, I want you to take a look at your hands. The future of America is in your hands.

May God continue to bless America! (Cheers, applause.)
