Franken Reaction To Facebook's Announcement Of Privacy Policy Changes

Press Release

Date: May 26, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) issued the following statement on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's announcement about improvements to Facebook's privacy policy:

"I am glad that Facebook is taking a step in the right direction with these changes. More Facebook users are speaking out and pressure is definitely mounting. I still believe that there is more to be done, both to give users more control over their personal information, and to make sure users are aware of how Facebook's April privacy policy changes have already affected their information. I will remain vigilant on this subject. Minnesotans should have the right to control who they share their personal information with."

These changes come in response to a recent request made by Sen. Franken. Last month, Sen. Franken urged Facebook to change its private policy so that third parties could not access a user's personal information without the user's consent. Sen. Franken, along with three colleagues, sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg urging the company to revisit its decision to provide select third party websites with personal information that users previously had the ability to keep private.
