Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

On President Obama's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, issued the following statement:

"President Obama has nominated an accomplished, well qualified individual to replace Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court. From Associate White House Counsel in the Clinton Administration to Dean of Harvard Law School to Solicitor General of the United States, Ms. Kagan has a long and distinguished career in law and public service. Throughout her career, she has won the respect and admiration of her colleagues for her knowledge of jurisprudence and public policy.

"If confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Kagan will be the first Supreme Court Justice without prior judicial experience since Lewis Powell and William Rehnquist were nominated by President Nixon. Her experiences off the bench will bring a unique set of skills and add a new level of diversity to the Court. I commend the President for nominating a fine American to our nation's highest court and I look forward to learning more about Solicitor General Kagan's views as the Senate Judiciary Committee begins the confirmation process."
