Hatch Statement On House Not Taking U p DC Voting Bill

Statement

Date: April 20, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) said today that he is pleased House Democratic leadership reversed course by announcing that the House will not consider legislation to give the District of Columbia a House seat and to force Utah to elect its additional seat at-large rather than after re-drawing congressional lines. Hatch has fought for a fourth House seat for Utah, and supported a Senate bill last year which would have allowed Utah to elect its House members after redistricting. Hatch issued the following statement:

"If the choice was between this deeply-flawed bill and no bill at all, no bill is hands down the better option. This legislation made a mockery of our system of federalism by dictating to the State of Utah how it chooses its elected representatives. This type of arrogant, Washington-knows-best attitude is exactly why people are so angry, and why I'm glad this legislation will not move forward through the House."
