Mack: Tax Freedom Day A Reminder That Government Is Too Big

Statement

Date: April 9, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) issued the following statement today on Tax Freedom Day, which marks the day when Americans stop working to pay taxes and support the federal government and start working to support themselves.

Mack said:

"Americans had to work well over three months this year in order to have earned enough to pay their federal, state and local taxes. Today is another stark reminder that our nation's complex tax system and Washington's out-of-control spending burden hardworking American families and businesses.

"The key to getting our economy moving again is keeping taxes low, spending in check, and removing burdensome regulations that discourage the private sector from creating jobs. Sadly, all we've seen from the Obama Administration and the Democratic Leadership in Congress are countless Big Government policies that equal more taxes, more spending, more government and less freedom.

"From the new health care "reform" law, to countless bailouts for Wall Street and the auto companies, I fear that Tax Freedom Day will arrive much later in the future.

"I remind my colleagues to heed Thomas Jefferson's sage advice: that a government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have."
