Issues: Oil and Gas

U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) released the following statement after President Obama announced plans to expand oil and gas drilling in the Atlantic.

"I support a comprehensive energy strategy that will put America back in control of our energy future. North Carolina's coastal economy is directly linked to our beautiful beaches and healthy oceans. To protect jobs in North Carolina, we must ensure that any new offshore drilling will not threaten our ability to enjoy the country's best beaches, and that new drilling will not negatively impact our commercial and recreational fishermen. I also will be working with my colleagues to ensure that fair revenue-sharing arrangements for our state are in place before any leases are approved. While the President's announcement is a positive step toward reducing our dependence on foreign oil, offshore drilling alone is not the answer to our energy challenges. We must continue investing in renewable resources, including wind, next-generation biofuels, and more fuel-efficient vehicle technologies."
