Healthcare for 32 Million More

Statement

Date: March 23, 2010

This morning, I joined President Obama following the signing of landmark healthcare reform legislation that will provide health care to 32 million more Americans.

Under the President's leadership, our nation will finally begin to control the rising cost of healthcare in America, improve the ability of all Americans to take their children to a doctor, and put the American people back in control of their healthcare decisions. And finally, for every American family, insurance companies will not be able to deny anyone healthcare coverage due to a pre-existing condition.

These national reforms will build on our efforts over the last three years to expand access to healthcare for 161,000 more Marylanders, including 78,500 children, and at the same time save Maryland taxpayers and small businesses the hidden costs of uncompensated care.

Because of the reforms we have already put in place in our state -- things like the Maryland Health Insurance Partnership for small businesses and closing the prescription drug donut hole for our seniors -- these federal reforms will save our state more than $1 billion over the next ten years.

And to make sure Maryland is doing all that it can to effectively implement these reforms, tomorrow I will be announcing the creation of new task force to make sure we maximize healthcare access and affordability for all Marylanders.
