House economic leader says kick budget busting hallmarks to the curb

As spring approaches, temperatures are on the rise, but consumer confidence is still falling, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan monthly survey.

"Consumers have too much to worry about," said U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX), the top House Republican on the Joint Economic Committee. "Not only are they worried about their own bank account; they're scared to death about the federal government's."

"This uncertainty can be summed up in 8 simple words 'What is Congress going to do to me?'" added Brady who doesn't expect consumers to gain confidence as long as costly government programs like health care reform and cap and trade are still viable threats to their wallets. Brady also noted that consumer sentiment about future conditions also fell this month.
