The U.S. Senate today passed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act to boost employment during the economic downturn. The bill passed 68-29 with Senator Evan Bayh's support. The HIRE Act consists of tax relief for small businesses to promote hiring, direct assistance for small businesses to pay for their expenses and investments in our nation's transportation infrastructure.

"Hoosier families and small businesses have borne the brunt of these tough economic times, and this bill will help them by cutting small business taxes and investing in transportation projects and new infrastructure," Bayh said. "It is refreshing to see Democrats and Republicans in Washington work together to support the No. 1 priority of the American people. We need to see a lot more of that in Washington."

The HIRE Act includes tax incentives for small businesses who hire new workers, a measure that Senator Bayh has long championed as a common-sense way to spur private-sector growth.

"Sustainable economic growth is going to come from small businesses, the backbone of the American economy," Bayh added. "Tax relief for small businesses that hire new workers is a direct way to create new jobs."
