Issue Position: Cap and Trade

Issue Position

The Democrats are taking aim at Texas … Texas jobs, that is.

Please help me stop Nancy Pelosi and her band of radical environmentalists in Congress from harming our state's economy even further during this recession.

The so-called "Cap and Trade" bill, which passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee last month, is really a national energy tax. The very liberal Committee Chairman, Henry Waxman (D- CA), drafted the 972-page legislation without any regard to how many jobs will be destroyed by the proposal. One policy group estimated that the proposal will do away with anywhere from 844,000 to 1.9 million jobs per year once it's fully implemented.

These job losses will come in states where large amounts of hydrocarbon-based energy (coal, oil or natural gas) is either produced or consumed. That means we'll pay a lot more in Texas for the Pelosi-proposed "Cap and Trade" system than most other states.

Oil refineries in Texas will be especially penalized, receiving far fewer "free" credits to offset their carbon emissions than industries such as steel or auto manufacturers. Besides causing gasoline prices to rise again like last summer, Pelosi's favoritism for labor union-controlled steel and autos over oil production and refining will discourage investment in those industries and cost us jobs at a time when we need them the most.

Your support will help me send a signal to the Democrats in Washington: "We're not going to sit back and allow you to destroy Texas jobs."

Let's show the Democrats that Republicans in Texas are willing to stand up and fight back.

All the best,

Pete Sessions
