Van Hollen Supports The End Health Insurance Monopolies Act Of 2010

Statement

Date: Feb. 5, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement in support of the End Health Insurance Monopolies Act of 2010, of which he is an original co-sponsor:

"I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the End Health Insurance Monopolies Act of 2010, announced today by Congressman Perriello and Congresswoman Markey. For too long health insurance companies have been permitted to engage in price fixing, market manipulation, and other questionable business practices without any consequences. This legislation repeals the blanket antitrust exemption afforded to health and medical malpractice insurance companies under the McCarran-Ferguson Act, and will finally restore fairness to this piece of our health insurance system.

"This critical bill will finally allow the law to hold health insurance companies accountable when they engage in anti-competitive behaviors that benefit their profit margins at the expense of American families. It is an important step in the right direction for health insurance reform, and we will continue to work to ensure our health system provides more affordable and accessible care for American families."
