Sen. Lugar's statement on State of the Union Address

"It is important that the Congress refocus attention on economic growth and job creation. The President has offered some ideas and Republicans and Democrats in Congress will have more. Without fuller employment and economic growth we will not be able to pay for more health care, national security, education improvements and other obligations of national, state and local governments," said Sen. Dick Lugar, the Senate's Senior Republican Member.

"One important step would be to reduce our dangerous dependency on foreign sources of oil -- a serious national security threat -- by taking steps that conserve energy thereby saving money for American families and enterprises, while creating new jobs. Encouraging flexible-fuel plug-in hybrid vehicles, updating buildings to reduce energy consumption, and developing homegrown sources of energy would be good places to start."
