Luján: LANL Project Can Help Airport Security

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján is urging the Department of Homeland Security to help speed up the implementation of liquid scanning technology being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in light of a failed Christmas Day airline attack.

Luján says the technology, known as MagViz, could help federal security officials identify harmful liquids a passenger might try to carry onboard.

"The technology of the MagViz system represents a clear improvement over our current magnetometer-dependent security scans that can detect only a very limited number of metal objects," Luján wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week.
