Boxer Statement on Earthquake in Haiti

U.S. Senator Boxer (D-CA) made the following statement today on yesterday's earthquake in Haiti:

"As a Senator from a state that has too often experienced the devastation of earthquakes, I want to express my deepest condolences to the people of Haiti who have suffered such extraordinary loss and destruction. The images of collapsed schools, hospitals, government buildings and homes from yesterday's earthquake are both stunning and heartbreaking. The people of Haiti are in our thoughts and prayers, as are the tens of thousands of American citizens who live and work there.

"President Obama has announced a coordinated effort to provide emergency disaster assistance, and I commend him for moving so quickly. My office stands ready to assist Californians who are concerned about their loved ones in Haiti.

"As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee responsible for oversight of U.S. participation in the United Nations, I would also like to express deep sympathy to the United Nations community. It is my understanding that the U.N. Headquarters in Haiti has collapsed, and that there is grave concern over the safety and well-being of the Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as well as dozens of U.N. staff."
