Press Release

Date: Dec. 21, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., today had a meeting with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson in his U.S. Capitol office to discuss issues of importance to coal mining in West Virginia.

Senator Byrd described the meeting, which was requested by Administrator Jackson, as a friendly and candid discussion. The two talked about the difficult issues affecting the mining industry. They both agreed that as part of their on-going discussions that a civil discourse amongst all parties must ensue in order to find solutions.

Byrd specifically asked for "the EPA, in conjunction with the other regulatory agencies, the coal industry, and unions to develop a clear set of parameters for issuing mining permits."

Administrator Jackson responded that the EPA will "seek and provide further clarity on standards in the near future."

This was the second meeting in Byrd's U.S. Capitol office held between the two. Senator Byrd met with Administrator Jackson shortly after her confirmation by the United States Senate in January 2009.
