BROWN CALLS ON COAKLEY TO RENOUNCE JOB-KILLING CAP AND TRADE BILL

U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown today called on his opponent Martha Coakley to drop her support for a national cap and trade bill, which will raise energy costs on businesses and consumers and kill jobs at a time when the economy is on the brink.

The National Association of Manufacturers predicts the loss of 2.4 million jobs by 2030 if cap and trade becomes law and residential electricity price increases of up to 50 percent. Energy prices in the Northeast are already the highest in the nation. In September, EMC Corp., one of the region's largest employers, announced it was adding 400 new jobs in North Carolina instead of Massachusetts because of the high cost of electricity here. "Cap and trade is anti-jobs and anti-growth. It would be bad for our economy and bad for working families. We all want a clean environment and we all want to reduce our dependence on carbon-based fuels, but we shouldn't do it at the expense of jobs. I think a better idea is to pursue alternative sources of energy, including nuclear power. Massachusetts can't afford Martha Coakley's giant new tax on energy," said Brown.
