News Article

Date: Dec. 7, 2009
Location: Rochester, NY

Congressman Chris Lee, a Republican whose district covers the western portion of New York, held his first meeting with energy leaders Monday at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Lee heard from the district's energy advisory board which included representatives from energy production, alternative energy and renewable energy fields. He says energy independence was the top priority among those he spoke to.

"How can the federal government incentivize businesses to create new technology and not penalize them, and that's what we've seen," says Lee. "In Washington we've had a very disjointed strategy, and again, the concept here is to educate me as to what we can be doing on a federal level to ensure that businesses can thrive and be successful."

Lee says the group talked about how to keep money from going off shore, and the challenges.

This is Lee's fifth meeting in a series of citizen panels to get advice from leaders and citizens in the region.

Lee proposed the American Energy Act - a solution he says offers affordable energy, good-paying jobs, energy independence, and a cleaner environment.
