Moran's Statement on Obama's Decision to Bring Terrorists to Midwest

Statement

Date: Dec. 15, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry Moran today made the following statement after the Obama Administration announced it would purchase the Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois to house terrorist detainees. The Administration plans to transfer terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay to this facility.

"It makes no sense to move terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States," Moran said. "Not only does this decision threaten the safety of Americans, but the President is asking taxpayers to foot the bill. The cost to acquire and upgrade the facility in Illinois will be substantial. Terrorists do not belong in our country. I will oppose any efforts to authorize and fund this dangerous policy. I fear that this decision is based on promises made on the campaign trail-not what is best for America's security."
