Location: Washington D.C.

To ensure Northern Michigan has a voice at the table in tackling the greatest challenge facing Americans, U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) has joined the newly formed Congressional Jobs Now Caucus. This bipartisan caucus was established to advocate for policy initiatives that foster job creation in all areas of employment and industry. The Jobs Caucus held its first meeting last Wednesday.

"While work on economic initiatives and job creation has been and will remain ongoing, the Jobs Caucus will provide a forum to draw from a broad spectrum of ideas to develop policies that will spur job growth and retention in Michigan and across the nation," Stupak said. "As families across Northern Michigan continue to struggle in the current economic crisis, it is critical for Congress to work together to find ways to create jobs now, while laying the groundwork to ensure our economy is well-positioned for future job creation and economic growth. One important way to do this is to invest in the infrastructure of our communities with projects such as building roads, updating water systems and increasing access to broadband Internet."

The Jobs Caucus was formed to advocate for policy initiatives that will stimulate and maintain a strong economy with a focus on job creation. More than 128 members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, have joined the Jobs Caucus.

During the first meeting of the Jobs Caucus several issues critical to Northern Michigan were highlighted, including the need to support the nation's manufacturing sector and the importance of leveling the playing field on foreign trade.

"As we work to rebuild our economy, it is more important than ever that our manufacturers are operating on a level playing field with their global competitors," Stupak said. "We have taken some important steps toward putting our economy back on track and we are starting to see some successes in Northern Michigan and across the nation. As I travel throughout the First District I know that jump-starting the economy remains our top concern."

Stupak is also a member of the Democratic Caucus Jobs Task Force. This task force is charged with developing job creation measures and making recommendations to Democratic leadership on issues related to job creation.
