Press Release

Date: Nov. 17, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the House passed House Resolution 851, recognizing and honoring SEARCH, The National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics, headquartered in Sacramento, California. Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D -- Sacramento) introduced the legislation earlier this year in anticipation of the consortium's 40th anniversary.

"SEARCH has made an incredible contribution to our criminal justice system," said Rep. Matsui on the House floor today during consideration of this legislation. "SEARCH has proven itself as an effective partner in helping not only to solve crimes that have already occurred, but also working to reduce the number of crimes committed in our neighborhoods."

SEARCH began in 1969 as a ten-state project to demonstrate whether it was feasible to exchange criminal history records on an automated and nationwide basis. Over the years, SEARCH has aided in the establishment of a national criminal history record information system, collaborating with the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and various State agencies. Today, the non-profit organization is comprised of 50 Members, appointed by each State's Governor as well as a full-time staff and a Board of Directors. Through conducting research, providing technical assistance, and training law enforcement at the Sacramento facility, SEARCH has become a leader in assisting members of the law enforcement community, especially with respect to high-technology crime.

"Sacramentans are honored to have SEARCH based in our community, but all Americans can appreciate their unwavering commitment to ensuring our safety and the safety of our children in communities across the country is impressive," said Matsui. "Over the past forty years, SEARCH has dedicated itself to improving justice and public safety."

Congresswoman Matsui will present SEARCH's Board of Directors, employees, and guests, with a copy of the Resolution at their 40th Anniversary Reception tonight in Washington, D.C.
