Press Release

Date: Nov. 25, 2009
Location: Montpelier, VT
Issues: Education

Governor Douglas announced today that he has received the final report of the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education.

The Task Force was created earlier this year to examine the Vermont State Colleges and University of Vermont systems to determine what academic and administrative efficiencies and improvements could be achieved through their close coordination or consolidation.

"I want to thank the members of the Task Force for their hard work and commitment to this review," said Governor Douglas. "Although the task force did not identify opportunities for achieving efficiencies through consolidation that could be implemented immediately, I am encouraged that they have identified several areas where future collaboration might be possible."

Governor Douglas encourages UVM President Dan Fogel and VSC Chancellor Tim Donovan to continue to work together to pursue those areas identified in the report where potential savings can be achieved. "In this difficult fiscal time, as state government examines every opportunity to find efficiencies in programs and services, it is incumbent upon both organizations to find efficiencies, set priorities and make the hard decisions to live within their means," said Governor Douglas.

The Governor's task force was chaired by Stephan Morse and included task force members Deborah McDowell, Dorothy Mitchell, Gary Moore and Frank Cioffi (designee for Ian Boyce).
