Shea-porter Votes To Extend Unemployment Insurance Benefits And Homebuyers' Tax Credit

Press Release

Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter voted in favor of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act. This legislation will extend unemployment benefits, the homebuyers' tax credit, and provide tax relief to businesses and military families. Last month, Shea-Porter sent letters to Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer urging them to extend the homebuyers' tax credit and to extend unemployment benefits. The bill passed the House with a bipartisan vote of 403 to 12.

"Our nation's economic crisis has taken a toll on many New Hampshire families," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "This legislation will provide immediate relief to people and will help stimulate our local economy."

The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act will provide an additional 14 weeks of unemployment benefits in all states, extend the first-time homebuyer tax credit through next spring, create a new tax credit for current homeowners who buy a new primary residence, expand eligibility for the homebuyer credit, and provide housing tax relief for members of the Armed Services serving overseas. The bill does not add to the federal deficit.

"Extending the homebuyers' tax credit will help strengthen the housing market by encouraging increased home sales," Shea-Porter added. "These efforts will help keep us on a path toward financial recovery."
