Senator Cardin Attends Launch Of Annapolis Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy

U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today joined officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the launch of the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy at the Annapolis City Dock. This was the 7th interpretative buoy to be deployed along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail as part of the Chesapeake Bay Interpretative Buoy System (CBIBS). Other buoys have been placed in the Potomac, Patapsco, Susquehanna, Rappahannock, James and Elizabeth rivers.

Senator Cardin is a strong supporter of the CBIBS and has requested $500,000 in the FY 2010 appropriations for five additional buoys. The buoys are on-the-water platforms that use modern technology to provide visitors with reports about weather, water quality and other environmental information.

"I recently introduced legislation that calls for aggressive action to restore the Bay to health and sustainability," said Senator Cardin, a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee. "I particularly want to commend NOAA for its monitoring and observing system in the Bay. This new buoy in Annapolis will be joining other monitors along the Capt. John Smith Trail as a way to help Marylanders and all Americans understand and appreciate the unique history, culture and environment of the Bay."

On October 21, Senator Cardin introduced the Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act, S. 1816, landmark legislation that gives states and local governments in the Chesapeake Bay watershed strong, new enforcement tools and more than $1.5 billion in new grant authority to restore the Bay's health.
