Kaufman Joins Democratic Senators In Urging Republicans To Stop Playing Politics With Unemployment Benefits

Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-DE) joined thirteen of his Democratic Senate colleagues today at a press conference to highlight the urgent need to extend unemployment benefits and to call for swift passage of Senate legislation that would immediately help jobless workers in Delaware and across the country.

"In Delaware, there are still thousands of families who stand to lose their benefits if we don't pass this bill," said Sen. Kaufman. "When you don't have a job, you're hurting. And these days, far too many Americans are hurting."

Jobless workers began exhausting their unemployment insurance benefits at the end of September, and nearly 2 million Americans will lose these benefits by the end of this year. Legislation to extend unemployment insurance for these workers has been held up in the Senate for nearly two weeks, despite repeated attempts by the Democratic leadership to pass this critical legislation. Under current law, 5,700 Delawareans are expected to exhaust their extended benefits by the end of the year [Division of Unemployment Insurance, State of Delaware].

"While the economy has begun to stabilize, we are not yet out of the woods," Sen. Kaufman continued. "We must make certain that those who have lost their jobs in Delaware and around the country will be able to put food on the table and take care of necessities for their families. This assistance will help those most in need in Delaware and across America stay on their feet until they can find a new job."
