Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women

A men's group dedicated to combating violence against women has received a $250,000 federal grant to continue its work in rural Minnesota, Congressman Jim Oberstar announced today. The Minnesota Men's Action Network is working to prevent violence against women in rural communities by providing education on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

"This is an innovative program that is designed to address the causes of violence," said Oberstar. "Investing in education and prevention pays big dividends. In addition to the financial savings realized from reducing the number of arrests and prosecutions, this program helps to alleviate the human cost of violence against women which results in broken lives and families."

The Minnesota Men's Action Network is a partnership of the Men as Peacemakers in Duluth and the Gender Violence Institute in Clearwater. The federal grant from the Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against Women will help establish four community-based coalitions in rural Minnesota that will engage in a series of prevention and educational activities.
