Fund The Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation

Statement

Date: Sept. 18, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

"I have personally travelled to Auschwitz and have seen with my own eyes the place which was home to the horror and terror wrought by the Nazis during the Holocaust. I believe it is a moral imperative to set aside the necessary funds to protect these hallowed grounds, where over a million people were murdered. Not only should we do so to preserve and honor the memories of the fallen, but also to remind future generations of what happened there. This should also serve as a warning of the need to combat evil wherever it may emerge.

"I proudly join 44 of my colleagues, to call upon President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to commit the U.S. to provide funding to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. The European Union and the Polish, German, French and British governments are providing resources and so should we. As we mark the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II this month, we must not let one of the bleak reminders of the war's legacy fade from our collective memory."

"I would like to thank my colleague, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), for initiating this letter and his leadership on this important issue."
