Rep. Judy Chu, D-El Monte, issued the following statement today on the Senate's confirmation this afternoon of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States:

"The Senate's confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as our nation's newest Supreme Court Justice is a giant leap forward not only for women and communities of color, but for the United States of America as a whole.

"I know that as the first Hispanic member of the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor will bring to the bench a diverse perspective on some of the most important legal questions facing the United States in the 21st Century.

"I am confident that she will rule with the same fairness, impartiality, discretion and respect for precedent that have been the hallmarks of her long and distinguished career."
