Lugar Contacts Labor Department On Behalf Of Whirlpool Workers

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar today asked the U.S. Department of Labor to begin the process of employment assistance to Whirlpool employees that will lose their job because of the announced closure of the Evansville facility.

“The congressional delegation will take every step to assure the Department of Labor provides help under their retraining and employment programs,” Lugar said. “We will work closely with the rapid response team established by Mayor Weinzapfel and other community leaders. We are dedicated to moving as quickly as possible to develop opportunities for the talented Whirlpool workforce.”

Lugar told Labor Secretary Hilda Solis that he wanted to inform her of “the pending mass-layoff event and to seek your help and guidance in identifying ways in which the federal government may be of assistance to those impacted by this situation.”
