United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today voted to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the next Justice to the United States Supreme Court. The Senate approved Judge Sotomayor's nomination by a vote of 68-31. Sen. Landrieu said:

"Today, the Senate began another important chapter in American history. Judge Sotomayor is truly a historic choice, as she becomes the first Hispanic Justice and the third woman to serve on our nation's highest court.

"Her life epitomizes the American Dream, and her personal journal is an inspiration to all Americans. Judge Sotomayor has proven that with determination and hard work anything is possible.

"Throughout the confirmation process, I have been impressed with Judge Sotomayor's intellect and knowledge of the law. Her character and unparalleled experience will serve her well has she addresses the challenge this position will bring. Judge Sotomayor will be both fair-minded and impartial, and I expect her to have a long and distinguished tenure on the United States Supreme Court."
