Blunt Amendment Blocking Federal Funding For Abortions Approved By Energy & Commerce Committee

An amendment blocking federal funding for abortions offered by Health Care Solutions Group Chairman Roy Blunt passed with bipartisan support this evening during consideration of the majority's plan for a government-takeover of health care.

Blunt's amendment, offered with Congressmen Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), prevents the health care plan, now moving through Congress, from requiring coverage for abortion on demand with federal tax dollars.

"As more and more Americans express their concerns over the government-takeover of our health care system, the Energy & Commerce Committee was able to send a clear signal tonight that American tax dollars should not be used to fund abortions," Blunt said.

"Again and again, Congress has made it clear that federal tax dollars should not be used to fund procedures that are objectionable to the majority of Americans. Tonight the Committee underscored that belief. I hope our bipartisan viewpoint is upheld as this bill moves forward," Blunt continued. "Every insurance premium holder and taxpayer in American would have been paying for abortions without this important change to the legislation."
