Carson: High Unemployment Rate Reiterates Urgent Need For Economic Recovery Package

Today, Congressman André Carson released the following statement after the Labor Department announced that the jobless rate rose to 7.2 percent in December and payrolls dropped by 524,000 jobs:

"With our country facing its highest jobless rate since 1983 and with the prospect of double-digit unemployment numbers looming on our economic horizon, it is critically important that the Congress continue to studiously work on an economic recovery package that puts displaced workers back to work, invests in our nation's infrastructure and provides substantive tax relief to working families and small businesses.

"By putting the unemployed back to work and by putting money back into the pockets of middle-income Americans, we can provide urgently needed relief to Hoosier families while also working to gradually improve the economic conditions in Central Indiana and across America.

"The dismal jobs report released today by the Labor Department highlights the fact that working Americans are in dire need of immediate and targeted economic assistance that will help them achieve a more stable and secure financial future."
