Dingell On The Draft Of The American Clean Energy And Security Act

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John D. Dingell made the following comments on the discussion draft of The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES), released today by Chairmen Henry A. Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Edward J. Markey of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee:

"While I have not yet had an opportunity to delve into all of the details of the 648 page Waxman-Markey draft bill, I applaud the Chairmen for the outreach they have done with Committee Members already and their commitment to move the bill through regular order.

"This bill is a massive undertaking and it will take substantial input from all members of the Committee to get it right. I look forward to continuing to work with Chairmen Waxman and Markey to get a bill that reduces greenhouse gases by the levels the science tells us is necessary and that protects jobs and consumers.

"On the issue of fuel economy harmonization, an issue in the bill I have reviewed thoroughly already, I am pleased that for the first time we have stepped past the stale debate over California standards verses national standards. This harmonization is critically important for an already struggling auto industry. I applaud the leadership the President has shown on this issue, and I look forward to working with the President and my colleagues to ensure that we have a single, strong, and obtainable standard for greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles."
