Slaughter Issues Statement on GM

Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter today issued the following statement after talking with representatives from General Motors:

"My heart goes out to all of the families and neighbors of GM workers who are affected by today's announcement. Plant closings here or anywhere are always disruptive and the affects of today's news will be felt for many years to come.

However, the good news for our area is that GM is going to keep making the engine for the Chevy Malibu in Tonawanda and will move some production from Detroit to New York. Although the company will make dramatic and necessary cuts across much of its infrastructure, I think we all agree that a healthier company will emerge from bankruptcy. I will continue to work closely with the company and its workers on GM's plans and any new movements that impact Western New York.

As for Delphi, while we are optimistic that both the Lockport and Rochester plants will remain open, I will continue to seek assurances that Delphi's fuel cell technology will continue to be developed and one day manufactured in Western New York regardless of ownership. I have secured millions to help Delphi accelerate development of its fuel cell. As a result Delphi is in position to start manufacturing this profitable new product within two years, helping to create and retain local high-tech jobs."
