DeLauro Statement on President's Budget

Statement

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3), chairwoman of the Agriculture-FDA Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement on the additional budget materials for fiscal year 2010 released by the Obama Administration.

"With the details of the budget, President Obama demonstrates his commitment to fiscal responsibility and creating the conditions necessary to create and save jobs while laying the foundation for long-term growth and prosperity.

"That means making the long-overdue investments critical to our future - in education; health care reform; renewable sources of energy. It also means making difficult decisions to restore fiscal discipline. And with the budget materials released today, the Administration proposed a list of 121 programs to eliminate or reduce. While I may not agree with all of these recommendations, they move us in the right direction as we begin the appropriations process.

"We face significant challenges in restoring balance to our nation's budget. The President inherited a mess - an economy in the midst of the worst recession since the great depression and a growing deficit - a result of mistaken policies and eight years of irresponsibility that avoided the hard decisions.

"This Congress shares the President's commitment to rein in spending and reduce the deficits. We will work closely with the Administration to review the details of the budget proposal, looking for areas of additional savings. Together we will restore balance to our nation's budget."
