Loebsack Applauds President Obama's Actions to Standardize Fuel Efficiency Standards

Congressman Loebsack issued the following statement today on President Obama's new national fuel efficiency standards. The new program will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5 mpg in 2016. The result is a projected reduction in oil consumption of approximately 1.8 billion barrels over the life of the program and a projected total reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 900 million metric tons.

"For too long we have let special interests in Washington prevent forward movement within the auto industry. By bringing everyone to the table to reach an agreement we have taken an important and substantial step forward.

"When you bring together leaders in the auto industry, the conservation community, and American workers to broker a deal, great progress will be made. By reaching a compromise that will set definite, national goals for the auto industry, we can all work together to rebuild America's proud manufacturing tradition, decrease our dangerous dependence on foreign oil, and keep our planet healthy all at the same time."
