Hoyer Statement on Weapons Acquisition Reform

Statement

Date: May 13, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in support of the Weapons Acquisition System Reform Through Enhancing Technical Knowledge and Oversight (WASTE TKO) Act, which passed the House today:

"The weapons acquisition reform legislation passed by the House today is a significant step toward reducing waste, fraud and abuse in government spending. A recent report found that the Defense Department had $296 billion in cost overruns on the acquisition of major weapons platforms. The legislation passed today includes significant reforms that will put an end to that waste by increasing transparency, oversight, and accountability to ensure that major defense aquisitions programs stay within their budgets so that we can continue to have a world-class military with the most advanced weapons systems.

"This measure is another way Democrats are working to protect taxpayer dollars and start bringing our nation's budget back to balance. While we all recognize that more must be done to reduce our deficits and debt, reforming weapons acquisitions is a good step as we continue working to restore fiscal responsibility."
