Senator Gillibrand and Nassau County Executive Suozzi Join Long Island Farm Bureau To Kick-Off "Grown on LI" Campaign

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi today joined with Joe Gergela from the Long Island Farm Bureau and Pat Hooker, Commissioner of New York State Agriculture and Markets to kick-off the "Grown on LI" campaign at Martin Viette Nurseries in East Norwich. Together, they announced a new initiative to unite consumers, growers, agricultural distributors and retailers to promote locally grown foods and plants.
"I am happy to join the Long Island Farm Bureau in announcing the "Grown on LI" campaign. Our local farmers are the backbone of our economy. It is important to highlight locally grown foods, flowers and locally produced wines so Long Islanders know what great products are grown right here in their backyard. I made sure that buy local and organic transition provisions were included in the Farm Bill and will continue to worked hard on behalf of New York and Long Island's farmers," said Senator Gillibrand.
Senator Gillibrand, the first New York Senator in nearly 40 years to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee, discussed Buy Local and Organic Transition provisions she worked to include in the farm bill. She will also speak about the upcoming Child Nutrition Reauthorization, which will encourage institutional purchasing of local products. They were joined by farmers from Nassau and Suffolk counties in addition to food distributors and advocates.
Prior, Senator Gillibrand gave the keynote address to the Long Island Association at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. In addition to addressing her priorities for Long Island and discussing Long Island's economic recovery, Senator Gillibrand called on the business community to hire local veterans. Senator Gillibrand presented resumes of returning members of the armed forces who have not yet found employment. She called on the community to come together to help these veterans find jobs.
