Issue Position: Card Check Bill

Issue Position

"The erroneously-named "Employee Free Choice Act" represents a blatant attack on the fundamentals of our democracy and free enterprise system with unprecedented government intervention into private, personal decision-making. This bill will deny employees a private ballot in union organizing by instead instituting "card check"--a process that violates workers' privacy by leaving workers vulnerable to union intimidation to sign public support cards for unionization.

"Despite unsupported claims of improving working conditions, card check is no more than a favor to union bosses looking to pad their dues-paying membership. By stacking the deck in favor of union bosses at the expense of workers and job-creators, card check will give union bosses a potential avenue to harass, coerce and deceive workers into union representation without regard to improving their working conditions. And by threatening both employer and employee rights and imposing undue government restrictions on businesses, card check promises little more than fewer worker rights and millions of jobs lost, according to non-partisan studies.

"American workers and employers are already experiencing tough economic challenges, and they cannot afford for House Democrats to play politics with their jobs. That is why I strongly support the Secret Ballot Protection Act that would safeguard workers' rights to a private ballot vote in the workplace. American voters have the right to vote in private in a polling booth, and American workers should be afforded no less on the job."
