Bond Reacts to President Obama's Address to Congress

We Must Address Challenges Head On, Work Together, Put Partisanship Aside

U.S. Senator Kit Bond to issued the following statement in reaction to President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress this evening:

"American families and small businesses are making sacrifices and cutting expenses. It's time for Washington to do the same.

"We can only be successful in tackling the serious issues facing our nation - the economic and housing crisis and the national security challenges that continue to grow - if we address them head on and if we work together, put partisanship aside and put our communities, our State, and our nation first.

"We all want our economy to recover and families to prosper. I will work with President Obama on areas where we can find common ground and put people and country first.

"We must work together to tackle the root cause of the economic crisis, create jobs and restore the financial security that American families need and deserve.

"I was pleased to hear President Obama mention the importance of solving our credit crisis, investing in early childhood education, and moving to energy independence and I look forward to partnering with him on these critical issues.

"While I heard the President talk about many areas we can work together, there were also troubling proposals that would put our economy at even greater risk.

"We can't tax our way out this crisis - especially on the backs of the small businesses that create jobs.

"It is also critical that President Obama rethink cap and trade.

"Carbon regulations would threaten every family, worker, farmer, and driver in America with higher energy prices and lost jobs and would cripple coal dependent states like Missouri."
