Will Murphy Return Latest Scandal Tainted Funds?

Donations from Leadership Tainted by Knowledge of Extramarital Affair

Republican Candidate Tom Manion (PA-08) today issued the following statement regarding revelations of House Democratic Leadership involvement in the extramarital affair scandal surrounding embattled incumbent Tim Mahoney (D-FL).

"Two years ago, Patrick Murphy called on former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick to return campaign funds received from then-House Speaker Dennis Hastert for his involvement in covering up a scandal in Florida for his own political gain," said Tom Manion.

"Back then, Murphy said ‘Fitzpatrick must return all funds tied to these immoral congressmen who have severely betrayed the public trust'. I agree that for too long our nation has been suffering from a severe lack of leadership at the national level, and that the days of allowing party leaders in Washington to ignore scandals for crass political gain must end."

"Patrick Murphy should demonstrate the courage of his past convictions and immediately return the tainted $14,000 he has received to date from the campaign and Leadership PAC of Democrat Caucus Chair Rahm Emanuel. ABC News has reported that Emanuel has been ‘working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign.'

"Unfortunately, Murphy's track record on returning scandal-tainted campaign funds is less than honorable. To date, he refuses to return the $14,000 he has received from the tax-dodging Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel.

"Our district deserves a representative who understands that taking money from politicians who ignore the misdeeds of other politicians is wrong, no matter which party is involved. Just last night Murphy said ‘he has lived his life with integrity and honor.' If so, he will return these funds. If not, than the voters in the 8th district deserve better than this blind partisanship."
