Issue Position: Tax Relief

Issue Position

Already, the Congressman has worked with his colleagues to bring tax relief to middle class Iowans by supporting:

* Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act, H.R. 5140, provides 117 million working families, 20 million seniors, and 250,000 disabled veterans cash up-front to help with everyday expenses. In Iowa, the average family received $917.00, many of whom have young children. The legislation also doubled the amount small businesses can write off their taxes for new investments to get our local economy growing and to help create new jobs.

* AMT relief Act, H.R. 3996, cuts taxes for the middle class and makes the tax code fairer for working families. Without it, hardworking Iowa families would have been hit with an average tax increase of nearly $2,000.

* Property Tax Relief Act of 2007, H.R. 3726, reduces the overall tax burden on Iowans by allowing all homeowners, not just those who itemize their deductions, to receive a property tax offset on their federal income taxes.

* Taxpayer Assistance and Simplification Act, H.R. 5719, strengthens taxpayer protections from identity theft and tax fraud, stop taxpayer harassment by ending the private collection of federal taxes, and stop federal contractors from using foreign subsidiaries to evade Social Security and Medicare taxes.
