Senator Dean Barkley's Pledge to Minnesota's Motorcyclists
You are the best person to decide if you need to wear a helmet or not. I will never vote to require you to wear a helmet as a federal mandate nor will I vote to black-mail states into requiring you to do so as well.
I will work to make sure that if you are injured while operating a motorcycle that your health insurance will cover the injury. A broken leg is a broken leg. How it happened is irrelevant. I will work to close the loophole in the HIPPA legislation that currently prevents that from happening.
I will work to toughen penalties when inattentive drivers violate another motorist's or a pedestrian's right of way. The penalties for causing personal injuries, property damage or death to other motorists, their passengers or pedestrians should be more than a slap on the wrist. Anything less than that is just a slap in the face, adding insult to injury.
I will never vote to deny law-abiding citizens the right to own or use I will never vote to deny law-abiding citizens their rights based on what they wear, what form of transportation they chose or who they associate with.
I will support legislation that provides adequate funding for motorcycle safety and rider education initiatives.
When you come to visit Washington, D.C., I will schedule an appointment time when I can meet with you in person, in my office, without interruption, for a period of time sufficient for you to fully discuss your issues and concerns.
As a member of the U.S. Senate, I come with no strings attached.
I work for you and I respect and honor that relationship.
Signed:
Dean Barkley
