Southwestern Indiana the Latest Hit With Job Loss

Southwestern Indiana became the latest region of the state to be hit by job losses as Evansville-based Accuride Corp. announced today that the company will lay off 11 percent of its work force.

Accuride said it will cut 159 salaried positions and 233 hourly workers, which adds up to 392 employees in total. Accuride produces commercial vehicle wheels, wheel-end components and assemblies, truck body and chassis parts, seating assemblies and other commercial vehicle components.

"Just yesterday Elkhart received news of more job losses and the day before that Columbia City and Auburn were hit," said Jill Long Thompson, Democratic nominee for Governor. "Evansville is just the latest community to be hurt by the Bush-Daniels economy. There is no question that we need a change in leadership here in Indiana to help create the good paying jobs that Hoosier families deserve."

This announcement also coincides with a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics report released on Friday that showed that Indiana's unemployment rate rose to 6.4 percent in August, up from 4.5 percent last August. The report also found that 207,195 Hoosiers are currently unemployed, an increase of 63,726 from last year and a 4,200 increase from July to August 2008.
