Whitehouse Reacts to President's Speech on the Economy

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) commented on President Bush's address to the nation last night on the Administration's plan to address the turmoil gripping U.S. financial markets:

"For worried Rhode Island families looking to Washington for answers amidst a serious economic crisis, President Bush last night offered little to help them, and no acknowledgement that these are problems of his own making.

"I am committed to working with my colleagues in the Senate to craft a sensible, workable plan that will restore stability to the markets, protect homeowners and taxpayers, and hold those who caused this mess responsible. I'm heartened that President Bush appears to understand that his own plan was hasty and inadequate, and that the taxpayer protections and limits on executive compensation windfalls that Democrats in Congress have demanded are among the necessary improvements. I hope he will convince his Congressional Republicans to work with us to get this done."
