Issue Position: Agriculture

Agriculture, our third pillar, is the largest sector of North Dakota's economy. The farming and ranching industries are the backbone of our rural communities, and continued focus on diversifying these industries through value-added ventures will only strengthen these communities and our entire state.

Agriculture is the largest sector of North Dakota's economy, making it a top priority for Governor Hoeven. The farming and ranching industries are the backbone of our rural communities, and our continued focus on diversifying these industries through value-added ventures is strengthening our
communities and our entire state.

Diversifying the Industry through Value-Added Ventures

• Under Governor Hoeven's leadership, North Dakota has expanded its ag-based renewable energy resources. A few years ago, North Dakota produced less than 40 million gallons of ethanol a year and no biodiesel. With projects currently operating or in development, North Dakota will produce more than half a billion gallons of ethanol and 85 million gallons of biodiesel every year.

• These facilities have not only breathed new life into the state's rural areas, but are helping lead the way to energy independence for the nation.

Supporting Legislation That Will Benefit Our State's Farmers and Ranchers

• Governor Hoeven led statewide and national efforts among fellow governors to include key priorities in the Farm Bill, such as:

o A continued countercyclical safety net for producers, with increases in some target prices, including wheat.

o An increase of direct payments for North Dakota crops such as wheat, barley, soybeans and oil seeds.

o A permanent disaster title to help producers manage weather-related agriculture disasters.

o Enhanced renewable energy and conservation titles.
