Shea-Porter Commends President for Modifying New Hampshire Disaster Declaration, Urges President to Provide Individual Assistance

New Hampshire—Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter today commended President Bush for modifying New Hampshire's Disaster Declaration to provide Federal Disaster Aid to all areas affected by the state's recent devastating weather.

"I am pleased the President has modified New Hampshire's Disaster Declaration and included Merrimack and Strafford counties in the Disaster Declaration," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "This critical assistance will help the areas affected by the recent storms and tornado. Although this is great news, I urge the President to provide individual assistance to the families that have been devastated by the damage from the storm."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides both public and individual assistance. Public assistance provides the communities affected with emergency operations and repairs, while individual assistance provides temporary housing, and some damage costs.

Last week, Congresswoman Shea-Porter sent a letter to President Bush urging him to include both Merrimack and Strafford counties in his Disaster Declaration. Shea-Porter also toured the affected areas with Governor Lynch, and later with New Hampshire Homeland Security Director Chris Pope.
