Issue Position: Immigration

Chet believes our nation's first priority is to secure our border and to protect our homeland. That is why he has supported funding to hire 5,700 additional border patrol agents.

Chet also believes that Congress should work together in a bipartisan manner to craft a comprehensive immigration reform plan that grants undocumented immigrants the opportunity to earn citizenship if they:

-learn English
-pay fines if an individual initially came here illegally
-maintain employment and pay taxes
-get in line behind those who came here legally and are applying for citizenship

Chet voted for the Welfare Reform Act in 1996 that put the laws on the books to further prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving any form of welfare benefits. Illegal immigrants are already prohibited by law from receiving any federal benefit, including Social Security. No individuals who are criminals or security risks should be eligible for citizenship.
