Issue Position: Economic Issues

Issue Position

America's successful and stable economy comes from its ability to adapt to varying conditions. US consumers and businesses are some of the smartest and most industrious in the world. As a proponent of small government, I believe the role of Congress is to foster capitalism by lowering burdensome taxes, reducing wasteful government spending, and eliminating unnecessary regulation. History has proven that economic freedom is the key to prosperity.

Sustaining economic growth requires responsible government action in a number of key areas:

Budget:

I have worked throughout my congressional career to reign in federal spending. A sound federal budget requires common sense budgeting procedures and fiscal responsibility. During my years in Congress I have been a staunch supporter of legislation balance the federal budget, reform the way we run programs like Medicare and Social Security, and reduce spending in other areas of the federal government. Americans have entrusted their elected officials with the responsibility of managing their tax dollars wisely, and I promise to continue fulfilling that commitment.

Taxes:

History has proven that low taxes stimulate economic growth. Our tax code has become increasingly complicated, and compliance has become more burdensome with every change we make to the system. I think an appropriate solution would be to abolish our current code and adopt a straight forward, simple system of taxation. However, until the majority of my colleagues come to this conclusion, I will continue to fight to lower the overall tax burden of every American.

Free Trade:

I firmly believe that free and open trade benefits all people. Unfortunately, there are many countries around the world that do not share this view. I support free trade agreements as long as the agreements are fair and do truly open trade between the parties. America has made great strides in recent years toward opening new markets for our goods in countries that have historically been closed off. It is my hope that American manufacturers will eventually be able to sell their goods in any country and without penalty.
