Extended Unemployment Benefits Take Effect Tomorrow, Offer Relief to Struggling Workers

Tomorrow unemployed workers in Michigan will begin receiving Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) checks through the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, which will offer immediate financial relief to struggling families in the 7th Congressional district.

Today Sen. Schauer issued the following statement:

"With prices rising on everything from gas to groceries, these extended benefits will offer much-needed relief to workers whose jobs have been shipped overseas, thanks to the unfair trade policies supported by George Bush and Tim Walberg. I've been fighting to pass stronger protections for victims of outsourcing for years, and this long overdue extension will give unemployed workers in Michigan more time to get back on their feet and help stabilize our economy."

Last year, Sen. Schauer co-sponsored similar legislation in the State Senate (SB 86) to extend unemployment benefits for Michigan workers by 13 weeks, and was a co-sponsor of an identical bill as far back as 2005.
