GOVERNOR ENCOURAGES WEST VIRGINIANS TO VOTE FOR PARKERSBURG AS 'TITLETOWN USA' THIS WEDNESDAY

Parkersburg is one of 20 finalists for ESPN's national competition

Gov. Joe Manchin today encouraged all West Virginians to log-on and vote for Parkersburg this Wednesday - allowing the West Virginia city to claim the title of ESPN cable sports network's competition known as "TitleTown USA."

"Voter participation will be the key determinant to decide what U.S. city will be recognized as TitleTown," Gov. Joe Manchin said. "Parkersburg is up against very solid competition for this prestigious honor, which is why I am asking fellow West Virginians to rally behind the city of Parkersburg in order to bring home the crown."

Parkersburg's segment of ESPN's "TitleTown" airs at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. this Tuesday. Viewers can go online this Wednesday through Saturday at http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/titletown/index to vote. There are no restrictions to the number of votes that can be submitted. The winner will be announced this Sunday during ESPN's regularly scheduled news programming.

"We truly like to showcase Mountain State success on the national level and in this case, it involves us coming together as a state to allow that to happen," the governor added. "Parkersburg has built a winning tradition and has worked hard to earn the right to be mentioned among the nation's elite, but now it is up to the voters to make the final choice."

Parkersburg high school sports include a combined 190 state championships among its three schools - Parkersburg, Parkersburg South and Parkersburg Catholic.

"TitleTown USA'' is defined by ESPN as "the town or city that shares a unique affinity with its title-winning professional, college or amateur sports teams.''
